How To Brew The Perfect Jasmine Dragon Pearl Tea

Jasmine Dragon Pearl Tea is believed to have originated in Ming Dynasty(1368-1644), which was recorded in the tea book called Cha Pu written by Gu Yuanqing(1564-1639). The gentle taste and smooth floral tones of the jasmine tea has given the flower a permanent place in Chinese culture since as early as Song Dynasty(960-1279) and there have been many offshoots into different versions of the tea made popular since.

The Dragon Pearl part of the name relates to a Chinese folk law telling how a young girl sought out a mystical dragon who dropped a pearl to the earth to grow the first jasmine tree, from which the girl brewed jasmine dragon pearl tea which saved her sick brother.

Whichever origin story you believe, this is a gorgeous floral and fruity tea and here is how to make your own at home:

To make from scratch, take some green tea leaves and fresh jasmine blossoms and hand roll them into small balls, or pearls, roughly the size of 1-1.5cm diameter. Tradition states that the leaves can be layered up to six times before rolling. After one night, the tea absorbs the fresh jasmine aroma completely, then take the pearls to bake in the oven at 100℃ for ten mins to completely dry. Then it is ok to brew the jasmine pearls for drink.

A rough estimate is to have 3gram of jasmine pearls per 8oz of water but this can be adjusted depending on how strong a taste you prefer.

To steep the tea heat the water to 80 degrees Centigrade (180 degrees Fahrenheit) and repeat at least 2-3 times for 3 minutes each time. For an improved flavour you should use filtered water.

As a way to really enhance the making of the tea you can use a clear teapot so that you can watch the pearls unfurl themselves during the infusion and truely immerse yourself in the process. Serving the tea in glass teaware will also highlight the colours of the brew and further increase your experience.

As you steep the tea it should let off layers of fresh floral aromas that fill the room. This should bring bright smells of jasmine and green tea that will inevitably relax you before the liquid has even touched your lips.

To the eye, your jasmine dragon pearl tea should have a gentle greenish, yellowy hue that entices your senses. To your tongue, there should be fresh floral notes with a spring-like quality that smoothly rolls relaxing waves down your body.
